This is the second time when the 1960’s autobiographical novel “Promise at Dawn” of the eminent French writer Romain Gary has been filmed. The first time was in 1970 with Director Jules Dassin, starring Melina Mercouri as Nina Kacew and Assi Dayan as Romain at age 25. The novel and respectively, the film cover the early life of the talented novelist, spanning over two decades. We witness the development of the character, starting from his poor childhood in Poland, going through his young adult years in Southern France and showing his WWII participation as an aviator in Africa and Europe. The story is not only about the two times winner of the Goncourt Prize for French literature. It shows the complicated relationship of Romain Gary with his mother Nina. Her overwhelming love and devotion motivate him to be successful but, at the same time, feels like a constant burden to the famous writer.
