Jared Eamons is the 19-year old son of Marshall Eamons (Russell Crowe), a Baptist preacher, and Nancy Eamons (Nicole Kidman), a hairdresser. The boy breaks with his girlfriend when he realizes a truth about himself - he is not sexually attracted to girls. Soon after that, Jared is forced to enter into a gay conversion therapy program, named "Love In Action”. He meets therapist Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton) who tells the group of gay boys that their sexuality is a fault of their families. Jared’s mother moves to a motel where she stays with her son until he completes the program. However, Jared soon discovers that it’s not clear when this therapy ends and that he may have to move into an on-campus house. The film is based on a 2016 autobiographical novel of the same name by Garrard Conley.
