You will not see the names of world-known actors and actresses in the cast list of this Lebanese drama film. The script is written by Nadine Labaki, an actress herself. Being also a director of the production, she preferred to let novice actors to play in the “Capernaum” for more authenticity. In the center of this painful story is the 12-year-old Syrian refugee Zain Al Rafeea. The boy was at the tender age of four when he moved to Lebanon with his parents. His character, Zain, is named after him. While still a child, Zain receives a five-year sentence for a violet crime. At the same time, he sues his parents for neglecting him. Labaki herself also appears in a small role. “Capernaum” won the Jury Prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and received a 15-minute standing applauses after its premier.
