" ‘The Painted Bird’ isn’t like other films about World War 2, it’s has no heroes and no greater cause. It just shows the harsh truth in Eastern Europe at the time. The move is a black and white drama directed and produced by Václav Marhoul and adapted from Jerzy Kosińskis novel by the same name. The movie follows a Jewish boy who is left on his own after his persecuted parents sent him to the countryside with some relatives. ‘The Painted Bird’ was met with a combination of great praise and massive walk outs when it was shown at various European film festivals. The movie contains very violent scenes but the fact is probably, that the world painted by ‘The Painted Bird’ is closer to reality than the sagas of heroes that we have gotten used to. "
