The story in this romantic drama begins in 1957. Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), is a 20-years-old French auto mechanic, who falls in love with the 3 years younger Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve). The charming girl works in her widowed mother's umbrella shop. The young lovers are happy together until the day in which Guy leaves for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria. The night before, Geneviève and Guy make love and she becomes pregnant. This event forces the young girl to make a very difficult life choice.
