Filming the final years of Dutch Post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh's life is not an easy task but Willem Defoe is brilliant, portraying the talented artist. The story follows a particular period of van Gogh's life - during the time he lived in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Being an extremely productive painter, he created more than 2,000 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings for just a decade. At the same time, the mind and souls of the talented man are torn apart by physical and mental pain, by depression, rejections and fears. “At Eternity’s Gate” is a visually delightful kaleidoscope. The Director Julian Schnabel is also a co-writer of the script. He has skilfully combined confirmed events of van Gogh’s life and his existing letters, with fictional moments, created for the purpose of this film.
