1979 - the year in which Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize, is also the year in which this film is set. It tells the thrilling story of two families, Strelzyk and Wetzel, who live in Eastern Germany but plan to go West and find freedom. What these citizens of Thüringen manage to figure out is how to leave the DDR using only a hot air balloon, created with their bare hands. When the special day arrives, the courageous people go to the border with West Germany and make their first attempt to find a better life in a non-communistic country. Surviving their balloon flight but missing their target, the Strelzyks and the Wetzels are lucky to avoid police but they remain in DDR. Unfortunately, traces of their escape efforts are found by Stasi - the secret police of East Germany which starts a merciless manhunt.
