When we refer to films, exploring the life of school children, it is not common to talk about murder, done by a teenager. This shocking situation happens in a school, located in the suburbs of Oslo. Lykke is a 13-year-old girl who beats to death her classmate Jamie during one of the school daily breaks. As it often happens, politics is involved as well, since Lykke is the daughter of a Labour Party member and Jamie - son of a right-wing politician of high calibre. Struggling with guilt and pain, with suffering and blame, the involved parties try to discover what really happened. However, juggling with contradicting versions and experiencing strong emotions, prevent them from resolving the conflict, created by this tragedy. Whatever the truth is, no one will be able to continue living normally after Jamies’s death.

A study of grief, guilt and communication

" The Norwegians can just like us Danes be a little calm in the way that doesn’t necessarily work well in great dramas like the one we know from France and Spain. However, director Dag Johan Haugerud has chosen to use this to his strength. Even though ‘Beware of the children’ treats death, guilt and secret affairs, Haugerud chooses to focus on the conversation. He isn’t interested in placing guilt, which makes ‘Beware of the children’ a unique experience compared to many other films treating the same themes. Haugerud investigates throughout the film, how we communicate when we have something to lose, when we feel guilty and when we feel cornered. This creates a new form of tension and some exceptionally strong portraits. "
