Esmail is an affable Iranian immigrant who is maniacally focused on the task to get married. The reason for his drama is not love but something pragmatic – he needs papers to stay in Denmark. But life is what happens while we make plans and Esmail’s story simply confirms this rule – he ultimately falls in love. This intense psychological drama with strong social elements is, to some degree, influenced by the “film noir” genre. This is the debut of the Copenhagen-based director of Iranian origin Milad Alami. A debut so successful that “The Charmer” became the winner of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, as well as six more world awards.
