Persian Lessons

France in 1942. The country is occupied by the Nazis and many people find their horrible death in the dreadful concentration camps. Gills is just an ordinary person, a Belgian jew who, same as his fellows, is arrested by the SS and sent to Germany. In order to survive, the young man invents a story about himself, explaining that he is actually a Persian, not a jew. Ironically, the chef of the kitchen camp, Klaus Koch, dreams of opening a restaurant in Iran after the end of the World War II. So, he employs Gilles to teach him Farsi. The more time Gilles and herr Koch spend together, the more jealous the other prisoners and SS guards feel to them. Moreover, it becomes clear to Gilles that he cannot postpone the moment of truth for a very long time.

The invention of a fake language

" Most people who have tried to learn a new language as adults, know that it is difficult. Now imagine instead that you should not learn a new language, but actually invent one. This is the premise of the movie ‘Persian Lessons’. The film takes place in a prison camp during World War II. Here Gilles, who is a Jew, manages to survive because he pretends to be Persian. In pure luck or misfortune, it turns out that the head of the camp is interested in learning Farsi, so now Gilles must invent fake Farsi in order to survive. Especially the film's two main characters Nahuel Perez Biscayart and Lars Eidinger have received great praise for their performances. ‘Persian Lessons’ will have its Danish cinema premiere on January 7th 2021.
