Set in 1946, this film is based on an epistolary novel. It tells the story of the young writer Juliet Ashton who travels across England to promote her latest book. During her journey, Juliet receives flowers from an American suitor - Mr. Markham V. Reynolds, Jr. However, her publisher and friend, Sidney, warns her that Mr. Reynolds' intentions are not pure but Juliet is charmed by the American and starts dating him. At the same time, the young woman receives a letter from a stranger who lives on an island. His name is Dawsey Adams and he is part of the "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". This fact intrigues Juliet and she tries to learn more about the members of this group. After visiting Guernsey Island and getting acquainted with its residents, the writer decides to create a special book that describes their war-time experience.
