Florence Green is a widow, living on the English coast, in the small town of Hardborough, which is part of the Suffolk county. The year is 1959 and it is not the best time to start business with books. However, Mrs. Green is a brave woman who takes the Old House that has been abandoned for years and transforms it into a cosy bookshop. Soon after that, Florence realises that with this action she has created herself an enemy in the face of the influential Violet Gamart. Furious that she has lost the opportunity to turn the Old House into an art centre, Mrs. Gamart seeks allies against the bookshop owner, trying to close it. While Florence feels that she is about to be defeated in this battle, a wealthy man, Edmund Brundish, steps in, offering his support.
