The seriousness of this medical condition – blindness has provoked Director Naomi Kawase to tell a deep, yet gentle story and reveal another point of view to love and life. Masaya is a passionate and sensitive woman who creates audio descriptions for the visually impaired people. Her acquaintance with an older photographer with progressively deteriorating eyesight changes her life. He touches her heart and she falls in love unconditionally. While Masaya’s and Misako’s relationship evolve, the disturbing issues of care and dependence are developed carefully, with good taste and aesthetics. Which makes perfectly understandable the fact that “Radiance” won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
